Answer: Sometimes plastic is necessary for safety, sanitation, or durability. When it is needed, it should be reused or designed so it can be recycled. When it is not necessary, we should choose a reusable product or a different material.

Answer: A visitor can take an idea home, a student can share it at school, or a business can put it into practice. When knowledge is shared, one lesson can inspire change throughout the community.

Question: Which common items do you think people mistakenly place in their recycling carts?
Answer: Common mistakes include plastic bags, cords, food scraps, foam containers, dirty items, and objects made from several materials. Local rules matter: an item should go in the recycling cart only if your recycling program accepts it.

Question: What goes into a worm-composting system—and what useful resource comes out?
Answer: Selected food scraps and other compostable materials go into the system. Worms and microorganisms break them down and produce nutrient-rich worm castings that can help plants grow.

Answer: People can take electronics apart, study the components, make repairs, and learn electrical and technical skills. The device stays out of the landfill while helping someone prepare for future education or employment.

Answer: Waste can be prevented while planning menus, purchasing ingredients, storing food, preparing meals, choosing portions, and saving leftovers. The best solution is to avoid creating the waste in the first place.

Question: How do the fish, bacteria, plants, and water help keep this system going?
Answer: Fish produce waste containing nutrients. Helpful bacteria make those nutrients available to the plants. The plants absorb the nutrients and help clean the water before it returns to the fish.

Answer: Almost any business can do this. A coffee shop could compost its coffee grounds, a bakery could turn extra bread into another product, or a store could reuse its shipping materials.

Answer: Food could be grown in warehouses, on rooftops, beside schools, in unused parking areas, or inside other shipping containers. Urban agriculture can turn small or unexpected spaces into productive farms.

Answer: Potentially many people. A book, puzzle, mug, or plant pot can be shared repeatedly as long as each person keeps it clean, safe, and in good condition before passing it along.

Answer: Plants can provide food, feed pollinators, shelter wildlife, protect soil, absorb rainwater, provide shade, and make the landscape more beautiful. One plant may perform several of these jobs at the same time.

Answer: Apples, blueberries, strawberries, cucumbers, squash, melons, almonds, peaches, and many other foods depend on or benefit from pollinators. Pollinators also help plants produce seeds needed for future growth.

Answer: The water gardens slow the rain and help it soak into the soil instead of rushing into a storm drain. Along the way, the water supports plants, wildlife, groundwater, and a healthier landscape.
