For Kids
At the Innovation Barn, we believe sustainability starts young—and we’re here to make it fun, hands-on, and inspiring. Our kids' programs are designed to spark curiosity and creativity while teaching real-world lessons about recycling, composting, food systems, and the circular economy. Whether they're earning their “Deputy of Diversion” badge, exploring aquaponics, or diving into DIY upcycling projects, kids leave with new skills, big ideas, and a growing passion for protecting the planet. Let’s raise the next generation of changemakers—one project at a time!
The Deputy of Diversion program is a fun, free, and educational experience for kids ages 6–14 to learn how to Recycle Right in Mecklenburg County. Through hands-on activities, interactive games, and creative projects—like making badges from recycled materials—kids explore the 7 Rs of sustainability and discover how their everyday actions can make a big impact. Each session wraps up with a badge ceremony and an official Deputy of Diversion certificate, empowering kids to become recycling champions in their homes, schools, and communities. It’s the perfect mix of learning, laughter, and landfill diversion! Check out our calendar to sign up.
